Wise County was once one of the largest apple growing areas in Virginia,  but that industry declined as many orchard lands were mined. The Lawson family is bringing fruit growing back to the region, this time planting grapes on reclaimed strip jobs and making wine at MountainRose Winery. Many of their labels are named after local coal seams. They see grape growing as a business with great potential, but as Suzanne Lawson says, its hard work and “you have to be in it for the long haul.”
